If you want to truly feel a part of a community's traditions, then the Estreito de Camara de Lobos Harvest Festival is right up your street. You'll head to this small mountain village in Madeira's wine-making heartland and join the locals in the annual grape harvest. Pluck grapes straight from the vine, then get stuck in with the giant grape press – don't worry, it's more of a celebratory, stomping dance than hard work. Your guide will tell you all about the history of these festivities as you sway to the folk music and sample the local food and wine.
