Things to do in Málaga Cathedral

4.6/5 (27)

Construction of the Málaga Cathedral, also known as the Catedral de la Encarnación, began in the 16th century and was largely completed in the 18th century. However, it technically remains unfinished as its south tower is incomplete, giving it the nickname "La Manquita" (one-armed). The cathedral is built on the same ground that held Málaga's central mosque during its Muslim domination.

Although it is considered one of the jewels of the Renaissance in Spain, it also has elements of Gothic and Baroque style. From its exterior, the main facade stands out, in a predominantly Baroque style, and the two towers: the north, 285 feet tall, is the highest of all Andalusian cathedrals, and houses the 14 bells and the clock, while the south tower, as mentioned earlier, is still unfinished.

The interior is no less spectacular. The cathedral is made up of three naves over 130 feet high, whose vaults stand out not only for their altitude but also for their rich decoration. The choir room houses one of the most outstanding examples of Spanish Baroque carpentry. The stalls, carved in cedar, Mahogony, and granadillo wood, were built in three stages. The impressive woodwork was completed by Ortiz de Vargas, Pedro de Mena and Giuseppe Micael Alfaro. Also noteworthy, are the two organs, 72 feet high and with more than 4,000 pipes! In the main chapel, visitors can also admire paintings by notable artists, such as Cesar Arbassia.

Since 2015, it is possible to access the roof of the cathedral. After climbing more than 200 steps, you will be rewarded with wonderful panoramic views of the city of Malaga.
